The Living Room

In the early days of Dope Church, we would just rent out a room at a hotel and use that as our church building. So many memories from that time period, both joyous and painful. As time passed we outgrew that place, had no place of our own for our community, and spent several years roaming from from camp, to hotel, to casino, and back again, blessing people in Jesus’ name.

It didn’t take long for us to realize that, in a world where so many wander from place to place with no sense of home, we needed our own home base. It was in this time that we began to dream about opening a place just for our friends on the streets to come alive as part of a community that learns to walk in Jesus’ ways together. In 2021, we opened The Living Room, the spot where our community is rooted and now grows. We are learning to be good family together here, with Jesus as the head of it all.

The Living Room is at 4314 Portland Avenue East, Tacoma, WA 98404

  • We open TLR for our community every Wednesday from 11am-4pm. We eat, learn, pray, laugh, and sometimes cry together. During these hours our friends on the streets can cook in the kitchen, use the shower to wash up, and do a load of laundry. Lord willing we will soon be able to open TLR every day of the week!

  • We all are born followers. The problems come when we follow people or ways that harm us or others. During our discipleship group (we affectionately call it our “Dope Lab”) we talk about real life and what God’s word has to say about it. This community discussion takes place Wednesdays at the end of our open hours, from 3-4pm.

  • There are all sorts of things we can do to try to change ourselves and the world we live in, but we are convinced that the most effective and powerful thing we can do is to pray together. Every Tuesday night we gather at 6pm to pray for whatever seems right at that time.

  • We gather every Sunday at TLR to enjoy life together. We sing, eat and drink, we pray, we hear good news. Sometimes we even have to call the paramedics or help someone not trash the place in a drunken stupor! It’s not your mama’s church, but that’s what we love about it.
